The President of the UN General Assembly, Mr. Mogens Lykketoft, received a South-South Award on behalf of the UN General Assembly on Saturday bestowed by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbados, Mr. Gaston Browne.
“I am honored to accept this award on behalf of the UN General Assembly and I congratulate all those individual award winners who have done so much to transform our world,” Mr. Lykketoft said on receiving the award. “This award recognizes the UN General Assembly’s contribution to the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and its achievement in reaching a landmark agreement to transform our world.
“Developing countries, big and small, together with their partners, have made fantastic progress in implementing the MDGs. As we begin the next chapter, let us be proud of those successes and share the lessons of what has worked well and what has not,” he said.
“With yesterday’s adoption of the 2030 Agenda, we have before us a truly revolutionary agreement. It’s ambition, universal application and analysis of global challenges is befitting this anniversary year,” he said.
“Ladies and gentlemen, great progress has indeed been made these past 15 years. Now, we must build on that by working together to make the 2030 Agenda a reality; by moving from commitments to action,” he concluded.
The South-South Awards at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel was an evening full of high entertainment with 15 UN Under-Secretary-Generals, including DGACM USG Tegegnework Gettu and DPI USG Cristina Gallach, current and future heads of states, committee chairs, UN ambassadors as well as representatives from the UN Secretariat present.
The South-South Awards gala aims to promote sustainable development globally by recognising contributions from governments, the UN, businesses and civil society, to advance the 2030 Agenda through awareness, outreach and recognition and to highlight areas of best practice and cooperation between and among countries of the global South.
This year’s 5th gala dinner featured celebrated actors, including videos by Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas and Forest Whitaker. The 2015 South-South Awards was held in support of the United Nations Summit for the adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations.
